BBC MONITORING, part of the BBC Service, provides a news and information service, based on the monitoring of world media, to BBC journalists, to British official customers and to commercial and media organizations.
From its headquarters at Caversham Park, Reading, in the UK, and from remotely-
controlled sites and staffed facilities around the globe, BBC Monitoring provides reports for its customers from open sources in over 140 countries. Built upon over 50 years' experience, BBC Monitoring is one of the world's largest and fastest media monitoring organizations.
To achieve its aims BBC Monitoring employs teams of skilled translators and journalists, who work with speed and accuracy in monitoring media around the world, selecting and translating reports of interest, and writing and editing reports which meet its customers' needs. It delivers the information to customers both in hard copy and electronically. It provides regionally focused information on both political and economic developments worldwide.
As part of its newsgathering operation, BBC Monitoring is represented in Moscow to assist in its monitoring of the Russian media. It is now aiming to recruit more local staff. The job will require first-rate linguistic, journalistic and analytical skills. Candidates will need to be computer-literate and to have good keyboard skills. As well as forming part of a small team, the successful candidate will be expected to work independently and with initiative.
Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo translating, editing, general knowledge and aural comprehension tests. The tests are likely to take place the week beginning 29 May 2006. Those successful in the tests will be interviewed in June.
Weekend and shift work will be involved.
We are expecting to recruit two candidates, initially on a 1-2 years contract with a possibility of extending it. It is hoped that the candidate will be available to begin work in July-August. Training will be provided.
